The soundtrack is sad because it really sets the theme of the crumbling reality of being a kid in The Maw Most kids besides Six don’t make it out of the maw and we venture with the runaway kid as he makes the escape. We see or get some kind of vision of the obvious fate of the other kids; dead. And when this music plays after all that Runaway kid went through to escape it makes you feel a sense of defeat or acceptance of whats to come because you know theres nothing else you can do. As if being a small, quite helpless kid in a big world wasn’t enough, You’re now even smaller with little stubs as arms and legs so all Runaway Kid could do was walk around mindlessly as he waited for Six to conceal his fate.
